Two is not always better than one!

Having more of something is not always better. In this case there are two traps under this kitchen sink draining to the same place. This setup is going to cause the sinks to drain slowly, and allow for backups to occur. There was a lot of water damage to under sink shelf most likely caused by leaks from improper installation of the plumbing.

As a home inspector I am not concerned with the fact that this is a code violation. My concern is for the homeowner being able to properly utilize their kitchen sinks. Here I would let my client know that this is an improper setup, and needs to be corrected by a qualified plumbing contractor. All in all this is not a very big deal, but it does lead to some conclusions.

There is a very high chance that this may have been some kind of handyman retrofit. We all know that some are handier than others. So setups like this are a clue that there just may be more interesting projects lying in wait around the house to be found during the inspection.

Just remember, extra is not always better!
